Using CFD Modeling to Predict the Transmission of COVID
Presented by Paul Bemis, President-Elect of the
Granite State ASHRAE Chapter
The primary goal of HVAC has historically been human thermal comfort. However, with the onset of COVID-19, and its ability to transmit as an aerosol, the issue of air movement in the room becomes much more important. Our models indicate the placement of supply and return diffusers in the room have a significant role in the potential transmission of pathogens. It is clear that increased focus on diffuser placement and resulting airflow will become more important in building design.
In this presentation, Paul will review how CFD modeling can be used as a valuable tool for predicting areas of potential pathogen accumulation, and thus increased risk of infection. He will review recent results from leading universities and discuss how this new information can be used to make more informed decisions in our daily lives.
