Technical Session Description: 

The presentation will discuss lessons learned involving natural gas systems, domestic hot water heaters and distribution systems, drainage systems, plumbing equipment heat loads, rain water reclaim systems, as well as commonly missed control points.

Main Program Description: 

The presentation will provide an overview of vibration isolation and restraints used with MEP systems to control noise and meet code requirements.

Attendees will become familiar with industry standard solutions used to control vibration from mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems as well as and solutions to restrain those systems to meet code requirements for earthquake, wind and blast forces.

Speaker Bios:

Mr. Steven Tafone, P.E.

Mr. Tafone has over 35 years of experience in the HVAC and construction fields. He is presently employed at Suffolk Construction, Inc., a construction management firm, as Vice President of Engineering. He is a past president of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Boston's Chapter. Additionally, he has been teaching various technical courses for over 10 years. Mr. Tafone is a registered Professional Engineer in MA & NY, has a CFC Universal Certification, LEED AP, and holds a MA licenses as a Refrigeration Technician. He received his BSME from Pratt Institute.

Mr. Karl Peterman, P.E.

Karl Peterman is a Senior Engineer with Vibro-Acoustics, located in the Toronto area in Canada. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in all 50 states and serves as engineer in responsible charge for isolation and restraint designs for non-structural building components. His professional career started in Atlanta as an HVAC systems designer after graduating from the Penn State Architectural Engineering program in 1994 and working the previous summer as an intern at BR+A. During his time in Atlanta he transitioned into acoustical consulting and became involved with ASHRAE at the Society level.

Karl has served on various committees in several organizations, including ASHRAE, ASTM, AHRI and ASCE.  He has served as Secretary, Vice-chair, and Chair of two ASHRAE Technical Committees: TC2.6, Sound and Vibration Control and TC2.7, Seismic and Wind Resistant Design.  He currently serves as a Project Committees liaison on the SPLS subcommittee of the ASHRAE Standards committee. Karl is a member of the AHRI Technical Committee on Sound which oversees all AHRI sound standards. He has also served on the ASCE task committee TC 8 to produce the 2016 revision of Chapter 13, “Seismic Design Requirements for Nonstructural Components,” in ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures
